Just how effective is conjugated linoleic acid at helping people shed unwanted pounds?

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled human study (the gold standard of research design) published in the Journal of International Medical Research, 20 participants were either given conjugated linoleic acid or an imposter (in the form of vegetable oil) daily for 12 weeks. At the end of the study period, the conjugated linoleic acid group lose significantly more body fat than the placebo group.7

In another double-blind, placebo-controlled human study conducted by renowned Swedish researcher Dr. Annika Smedman, those receiving conjugated linoleic acid again lost significantly more fat than the placebo group, over the course of 12 weeks.8

There’s no shortage of evidence when it comes to the potential fat-blasting effects of conjugated linoleic acid…

Perhaps most telling are the results from three separate systematic reviews with meta-analysis, which arguably represents the most critical assessment of research on a particular topic. In the most robust review published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers from the University of Wisconsin evaluated 18 eligible studies and confirmed that supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid leads to significant fat loss.9

In a second review published in the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers from the University of Exeter corroborated these findings, with their meta-analysis revealing a significant reduction in fat mass with conjugated linoleic acid supplementation compared to placebo.10

In addition to fat loss, a meta-analysis published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism found that supplementation with CLA results in a significant increase in fat-free mass (FFM) compared to placebo. This has important implications for metabolism (more FFM means more calories burned), appearance (achieving that lean, toned look you desire), and preventing weight regain.11

Clearly, research shows conjugated linoleic acid has a unique ability to naturally increase fat loss, but there’s one big problem: the scientifically-effective amount of conjugated linoleic acid (i.e., the daily amount necessary to obtain the evidence-based benefits) is upwards of 2 grams per day, an amount that makes obtaining this level a virtual impossibility through beef and dairy products alone.

5 and ½ sticks of butter
